The Revolution Will Be Televised - A Series of Political Outrage Collages - By Sophie Hernandez

As people of color, I think it is safe to assume that the vast majority of us are outraged and disgusted by what the US government has been doing to us. We can hardly go a day without seeing our brothers, sisters, and children being kidnapped, harassed, injured, or worse by the hands of ICE or the police. Although the violence inflicted upon Black and Brown people is nothing new, the usage of cell phones and social media is bringing more of this state sanctioned terror to public view. More and more people are being forced to face what is being inflicted on people of color through simply opening Facebook or Instagram; only to see yet another passer-by video of someone being taken from their family and having their lives completely uprooted.

The first piece in this series, titled “The Revolution Will Be Televised,” is an homage to Gil Scott-Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” This piece is not at all meant to say that Heron was incorrect with his statement- I believe Heron’s poem is a quintessential piece in understanding how we as a people can make significant change within ourselves, in our direct communities, and on a larger societal level. With the addition of social media, the revolution is now taking place within our minds as well as on a massively televised scale.

Being a visual artist my entire life, I knew that I wanted my art to make an impression and make a difference in people’s lives. During a time where rightful tensions and distrust between the people and the 1% are extremely high, art is more important than ever. I pride myself and my practice on being unquestionably about, for, and by the people. The goal for this collage series was to express my anger with the systems we find ourselves trapped in, as well as to connect with others who are feeling similarly about where we find ourselves.
