Synopsis: Project Hail Mary (2026)

In Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a down-on-his-luck middle school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship light-years from Earth with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As his memory slowly returns, he realizes he’s been sent on a desperate, one-way mission: a mysterious microorganism called Astrophage is draining the sun’s energy, threatening to plunge Earth into a new ice age and cause humanity’s extinction.

The film follows Grace as he races against time to solve the scientific riddle that could save the planet, only to discover he’s not entirely alone in the cosmos. He forms an unlikely and unexpectedly moving friendship with an alien engineer he names “Rocky,” and the two must learn to communicate and work together to save both of their worlds.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), this adaptation of Andy Weir’s best-selling novel has been praised as a “crowd-pleaser” that balances genuine scientific intrigue with surprising humor and heartfelt emotion. Proving that even at the end of the world, no one should have to face it alone.

Review

written by Stephano Padilla

Going into this film I had every expectation of it being great. Great lead actor, great directors, supposedly great source material (I’ve never read it but its certainly on my list now, ) and a killer cinematographer combined with a stellar box office result it was hard to not get my hopes up.

Happy to say I wasn’t remotely disappointed and my apparent Ryan Gosling bias aside it’ll be my favorite movie of the year maybe until The Odyssey or Dune part 3 comes out? Both will also be art but Project Hail Mary already has something they won’t, more inherent rewatchability.

Gorgeous visuals, amazing acting with heartfelt performances from a talking rock that could do circles around other actors of the same name. Interesting enough to always be enjoyable and not overly science-y enough that makes it a hard watch. Most importantly, a heartwarming film that takes away from the grimness of everything that’s been happening lately.

9/10 Stars. Highly Recommended.
